Kani & Jamawar Heritage · कानी · जामावार

Woven, not printed — the loom art Mughal courts collected.

Kani is Kashmir's twill-tapestry weave — patterns built thread by thread with wooden kani bobbins, following a coded talim script — and a jamawar is its all-over masterpiece, taking months to years per shawl. This heritage collection is honestly tiered: entry kani weave in wool from ₹3,499, semi-pashmina kani stoles, and GI-certified pure kani and jamawar pashminas from ₹34,999 up to the one-of-three Mughal Bagh masterpiece. Each listing states weave, fibre and loom time.

Questions

About kani & jamawar heritage

What is the price of a real kani shawl?

GI-certified pure kani pashmina starts at ₹34,999, palledar at ₹54,999 and jamawar at ₹69,999, up to the ₹1,49,000 Mughal Bagh masterpiece. Kani-look weaves in wool run ₹3,499–8,999 — labelled as wool, never as pashmina.

How is kani different from a printed paisley shawl?

Kani is woven, not printed — each motif is built with small wooden bobbins following the talim code, so the pattern is in the cloth itself. Flip it over: a true kani shows the weave on the reverse.

What is a jamawar?

Jama-war means "robe-piece" — a shawl where the woven pattern covers the entire field, not just the border. A pure pashmina jamawar can spend one to three years on the loom.

Is a kani shawl a good heirloom purchase?

Yes — pure kani and jamawar pashminas are the pieces museums collect and families pass down. Each of ours carries its GI certificate and loom documentation, which travel with the shawl across generations.
